「イマージョン教育」という言葉を聞いたことがありますか？

イマージョン（Immersion）という言葉自体は、（液体に）浸すことや熱中、没頭などを意味します。
よく「英語のシャワーを浴びる」という表現を聞くことがありますが、言語を液体に例えたときに、浸るほど密にその言語環境の中に身を置くということです。１９６０年代にカナダで始まり、現在日本を含め世界中に広まっている学習法の一つです。

この手法の利点としてあげられるのが、圧倒的な時間数とその内容です。

言語を獲得するためには約３０００時間が必要と言われています。
英語が苦手だといわれる日本人が、通常英語に接する時間がどれくらいだかご存知ですか？
授業時間数だけだと小学校５年生から大学卒業までで約１０００時間です！英語に接する絶対的な時間数が足りていないことが、日本人の英語力不足の一因でもあるのかもしれません。

当園の場合はどうでしょう。例えば当園に３年間在籍したとします。一年のうち２００日登園し、毎日５時間ほど英語にふれたとします。すると

３（年）×２００（日）×５（時間）＝3000時間!

この計算式のように単純にはいかないかもしれませんが、それでも保育園に通っている間にこれだけ英語にふれる時間ができるというのはとても価値のあることではないでしょうか。

そしてもう一つの利点が内容です。英語を学ぶというとどうしても教科書を使って単語や文法を覚えてテストして…と「勉強」をイメージしてしまいます。イマージョン教育のいいところは内容にとらわれないことです。英語「を」学ぶのではなく、英語「で」学ぶことができるのです。どろだんごをつくる、お店屋さんごっこをする、歌を歌う、読み聞かせをする、どんな内容だったとしてもそこに英語が介在することでイマージョン教育になり、子どもたちに英語にふれる時間を確保できます。幼児期に育てるべき資質として重要視される非認知能力やいわゆる「生きる力」も同時に育むことが可能です。

英語は本来楽しいものです。幼児期に英語が得意になれば、小学校以降に教科として学ぶときも自信をもって取り組むことができます。当園のロゴ「SmilEnglish」が示すように、笑顔と英語があふれる当園で子どもたちに世界で輝くことができるチカラを☆彡

Have you ever heard of the expression, “Immersion Education”?

Immersion means the action of thrusting or putting someone or something in a liquid, or deep mental involvement. Immersion education in language learning means to be densely submerged in the language learning environment.

This method of learning language started in Canada, back in the 1960s, and now, it has spread all over the world.

The advantages of immersion education include the number of contact hours for learners and the scope and contents of what is learned.

It is said that to acquire language, it takes about 3000 hours.
Do you know how much time an average Japanese takes in learning English?
From the fifth grade (of elementary school) to the final year of university graduation. This is only about 1000 hours! No wonder Japanese people are not so confident in speaking English.

Let’s look at our preschool. For instance, if there is a child, who starts at our preschool at age 3. If that child attends the preschool for 200 days per year and learns English 5 hours a day, the math equation would be about 3000 hours.

It might not be as easy as this equation explains, but it means a lot for children to be able to learn English for such a long period of time.

The other positive point is that the contents of what is learned. When Japanese people think about English, they seem to imagine “studying” English by remembering grammar rules, vocabulary, and preparing for tests. The good thing about English immersion education is that the contents do not matter. The goal is not “to” learn English, but learn “by” using English. For example, playing at the sandpit, playing shopkeeper, (role-plays) singing songs, reading and telling stories, no matter what the contents, when it is done through English, that could be termed English immersion and children will be exposed to the language in totality. The important aspect in early childhood education, non-cognitive skills and the zest of life can also be nurtured.

English is meant to be fun. If young children feel they are good at English, they will be confident in learning English when they go up to elementary schools. As our logo says, we hope to nurture children full of smiles and to enjoy fun times in the English environment. ☆彡
